I have an input D.C. signal in the form of a pulse.I want that signal to ignite my external power source and using that source, i want my circuit to operate for specified time limit. What device can do that conveniently?

It rather depends upon your input DC signal pulse. What voltage, how much current is available, and what is the duration of the pulse?

    Positive pulse or negative pulse?

With proper conditioning, the pulse could trigger a 555 monostable. The monostable output could then control a MOSFET or other switch for your power supply.

Look here for some information on the 555 timer.
