Time Delay circuit triggered with a NPN sensor

Hi everybody! Could you please be so kind to help me find a simple circuit solution for a time delay circuit which a signal is input (by means of a NPN sensor) and then a signal will be output after 3 - 20 sec (variable).

Requirments:
Vin: 12V
Vout:12V
I can use simple components such as: resistors, capacitors, transistors and diodes only. Is it possible to use a 555 IC?

Any help will be much appreciated. Many thanks in advance.
