That depends on the jurisdiction. I checked Wisconsin, for instance, and it appears to be OK there.

My only point was that the cyclist was doing something marginally dumb - riding in the wrong lane - and almost paid a very high price even though the accident had nothing to do with his actions. (Unless one of the drivers was distracted by seeing him and then failed to see the larger threat.)

It's always the cyclist's fault, one time I was lying bleeding in the road after a hit and run by a car coming out of a side road and an old man came up to me, said there was no tread on my tyres and walked off (of course there is no need for tread on cycle tyres, that's the way they come out of the factory).

I think I'll point to this thread next time people ask why automotive stuff isn't allowed. A nice review of the various laws should drive home the point.

The cyclist lost the battle of two differing weights colliding.
