im working on the tank capacitor for my spark gap tesla coil. i just had a quick question. i doubt i will find the ideal capacitance i need of 8.6nF. if i cant find the exact, but a close value, would it be better to error on the high side or error on the low side of 8.6nF?

I guess the answer depends on exactly how you arrived at the "ideal" capacitance of 8.6nF. If that value vaires, then the frequency of the tank also varies, but there are other components that affect the frequency, so you can compensate for the change. TC's are mostly experimental so I encourage you to experiment with different caps till you get the effects you desire.
