R1=2.2 kohms
R2= 3.3 kohms
R3=4.7 kohms

the question states find the current through R1

I have tried removing the voltage source and simplified the circuit to get a current of 2mA going through R1 and 3mA going through R2. Not sure how to move forward or weather this is the right step.

 

In first step you short the voltage source and find the R1 current.
To find this current all you need to do is to use a current divider rule

IR1 = 5mA * 3.3/( 3.3 + 2.2) = ??

In the next step you remove the current source (open circuit) and using Ohms law find R1 current.
And finally you sums up these two currents .
