Good day,

What is the general basic/simple cheap chip that takes in two inputs (step and direction) and then translates it into the 4 wire stepper control sequence.

There are numerous stepper ICs out there..
Allegro/Linear,etc.. all make them. Most are spec'd by the voltage/current per phase required, amount of microstepping,etc...
