Stepper motor help sought!

I have a few salvaged stepper motors (from old inkjet printers) I would like to make use of.
I want to control the speed but WITHOUT the use of a computer or Pi etc. However I seem to be missing something.
I’ve tried using a 'Maplin' Stepper motor driver module (based on the SAA1027 chip) however when I connect it up and power it up nothing happens.
Am I correct in thinking that I also need some sort to 'pulse' or timing signal module?
If so how do I achieve this (preferrable with a matrix board layout as my knowledge of electronics theory is minimal - I can put projects together and that's about it!)
All the ‘Google’ searching I have done seems to assume you know how to do this and are very 'vague' about the point.
Some sort of simple NE555 circuit maybe?
Many thanks for you help in advance, Steve P

Presumably the drive has a step and direction inputs, the direction is taken high or low and then you pulse the Step input.
You should be able to find a 555 stepper pulser.
Are these motors Bi or Uni polar?
4 leads or 6?
Max.
