Why have the single winding as the input, and the two windings as the output, and not the other way round?
Answer, which might be worth appending to the entry. Even though the basic function will work whichever sides are used for the input and output, using the anti-phase connected windings as the output will tend to cancel power-line and other external magnetic fields.
