I am making a small battery operated spark generator for a xmas gift. It's a simple 555+transformer+transistor. It works moderately well but I am wondering: what is the best way to limit the current to keep it at a safe range? I have tried just adding a resistor in series with the output spark gap but that makes the already tiny spark a bit smaller, but there may not be a way around that.

Just want to hear ideas.
