    Hi Guys,
i have a 50w variable temp soldering iron like the one below
    http://www.maplin.co.uk/50w-solder-station-35016
The only problem is that it seems to have stopped working, :(
one of the parts is damaged and i cant get to the circuit board....

I was just wondering, correct if i'm wrong (I probably am) but can I not just connect the soldering iron strait to mains? bypass the variable temp function (which I can do without until I buy a new one) the only problem I see with this is that there is now way to regulate the current, will i just keep blowing fuses?
    what do you guys think?

    Do not connect to mains.

According to some of the reviews, that iron doesn't last very long.

It isn't changing the temperature what's important, it's that the temperature is regulated to the optimum value.
