I have single phase pole lights that need ballasts. I have 3 leads coming from the supply (2 hot and a ground). The new ballast calls for the power to be hooked to 1 480v lead and a common to the other lead of the ballast. I do not have a common from the supply? Do I leave the common from the ballast unhooked?

If it is a 480 VAC input ballast it will need to be connected across the 480 VAC power lines.

I'd be very surprised if either the ballast or supply was 480vac.
If it is you're good to go.
480vac lighting is not common here.

You should have a hot and a neutral.
As it's not a 120vac neutral, it may be colored other than white or grey or striped.

Check to see if 277vac is supplied and required.

Check with electrician to be safe. We can't "see" what you have.

    EACH?

    Or between phases?

Sounds like one of those odd 480 VAC delta configurations with one leg center tapped for a 240 -0 - 240 split.

480 VAC ballasts are actually fairly common. I have scrapped out dozens of them being they have no real use for me.

A lot of the large high mast lighting systems along highways and in large parking lots use 480 VAC powered ballasts. It's the most cost effective way to get the most power the furthest distance. ;)

I only work on interior lighting and 277 is common.

Never ran into a 480 delta except for a corner grounded widow maker.

Tapped delta seems no safer. But handy for 240 loads.
