When a diode is reverse biased, does it act as a open circuit or short circuit? Can anyone tell me why?

If I attach a battery in the opposite polarity to it, what will the pd be across the branch consisting of these 2 elements?

A reverse bias diode will go open circuit,Although there will be some leakage ,it depends on the diode and what you are using it to do whether the leakage is important.

A reverse biased diode acts like an open circuit.

I have included a link to the diode section of the AAC ebook where you can get more comprehensive explanation of the behaviour of a diode than can be presented here.
