My final answer places the resultant vector in quadrant 4 (+ real, - imag) but pictorially when I add the two you can see I should be in the first quadrant... what's wrong?

When you add the two rectangular components of f(x) and g(x) you should get,

11.4 + j4.57 not 11.4 - j4.57
