They connect with wires.

Google "pic & sd" and you will get lots of relevant hits. The SPI module makes all the electrical signals for the transfer, standard I/O pins do the rest.

Most use SPI to connect a SD card to a microcontroller in hobby projects, it is much easier than the SD card's main protocol.
