Schmitt trigger source?

Hi, I'm designing a schmitt triger to get a pulse wave generator. What I want to ask is that isthe schmit circuit works only with triangular shaped inputs? For instance when I've tried with a sine input it failled. I think I did not really understand the system exacty :(. A nice explanation would be great or a source.

In principle, the input waveshape should not be critical, but I would echo the last poster's comment: show us the circuit!

Perhaps if they tried to use an AC signal it killed the Schmitt IC by conducting too much current through the clamp diodes.
