I'm requesting suggestions for reference material on making a voltage regulator to replace one missing from a 4.5KW Kohler 4.5CM21 generator (it seems the generator was cannibalized before I bought the RV). New regulators are available for about $400, but I'm hoping there is a more reasonably priced alternative in making one myself. I have on backorder from amazon.com a book titled "Generators, Exciters and Voltage Regulators", but I don't know what's in it.

When you say voltage regulator, are you talking about an inverter? If not then what? I'm not too familiar with RV's

I found a schematic on this thread: http://www.smokstak.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20021
I've attached it; unfortunately the resolution is very poor.

What is the spec# of your generator?

Here's a table of wiring diagram numbers depending upon your spec number.

Wiring Diagraom Specification Number
Wiring Diagram Cross-Reference
Spec Model Drawing
13900 4.5CM21 269154
13901 4.5CM21 269154
13902 4.5CM21 269186
13903 4.5CM21 269186
13904 4.5CM21 269154
13907 4.5CM21 269186
13908 4.5CM21 269154

I did find some more information, including the schematic from the smokstack site. I apologize for my original post being too early (I hadn't done enough yet with the generator and materials on hand before posting). I have an appropriate engine manual, and need to compare it more closely with the mostly complete generator. I thought I needed a "voltage regulator" because my cousin (who's a mechanic and has much more experience with RVs and engines) was working on the generator and called a friend of his for advice, and relayed that to me.

Until I spend some more effort on this myself, the only thing I can ask from anyone here is if they are familiar with the backordered book ($10 at Amazon) "Generators, Exciters and Voltage Regulators", and could offer a brief review (I found no reviews or summaries of contents).

Thanks again!
