'RFID like' technology

I want to design a circuit to triangulate the angle to a passive RFID like circuit sticker. My only requirements are that the sticker I am trying to find must be passive and relatively light and small like an RFID tag, and the system should work ideally up to 15M of separation between the detector and the tag.

We are considering using RFID with a long range reader, but I just need the angle, not really an ID at all. Can anyone recommend a promising technology that might work for this?

Thanks for the pointers. I am hoping to simplify the problem by just detecting the signal strength of one tag of a known ID. All of these applications handle hundreds or thousands of IDs simultaneously, but I just want to track a single one. Can I leverage this to simplify the detector? Is there possibly an alternative technology (to RFID) that will allow me to determine the distance to a passive sticker of known properties at a range of 15M?
