I have been told to use a 10 Ohm 10 Watt resistor. What would happen if I use a 10 Ohm 50 Watt resistor? Are there any negative side-effects?

Hello,

No. The heat will be spread more even on the 50 Watts resistor.
You can take a higher wattage (if you have the space), but not a lower as recommended.
