I am looking to find a way to activate brake lights on a remote control vehicle at the appropriate time.

It occurred to me that while not 100% realistic, if the brake lights (two LED's) could light up when the voltage drops to the electric motor (indicating the vehicle is slowing down) that might work.

I need to watch the volts on a motor throughout the rpm cycle to see if it changes, it might be the amps that change, depends on how the speed control works.

Is there something that could be spliced inline of a power or ground wire running to an electric motor that would activate a switch in the event of a change of voltage?

Usually this thing is controlled by PWM and not linear voltage. Have a look and make sure which one is yours first.
