A broad based education is always the best approach and software companies value engineers with hardware skills. I would suggest that gaining some exposure to hardware languages is not a bad start.

I second Dave's comments regarding the value of skills in both the hardware and software arena.

When it comes to embedded designs, these two skills are paramount to success.

When it comes to embedded designs, I have heard several Engineering Managers comment that they have found it easier to teach software programming to an electrical engineer than to teach electrical engineering to a software engineer.
