Are you wanting to implement a proximity switch or are you looking to implement a touch switch?

A touch switch can be built with a single MOSFET. A proximity switch is bit more involved.

Are you thinking of HALL effect sensors? They often look like NPN and/or PNP transistors and can be used for proximity sensors/switches

And some even more so.

Industrial prox switches are referred to as NPN or PNP depending on how the output is configured. An NPN prox is a low side switch, a PNP is a high side switch.
