How about automatically braking a delivery robot so it doesn't run into a human? How about alerting you to the presence of a wall/object close to a bumper of your car? A fathometer can be handy to a ship in shallow water.

So far, bathroom sensors seem to be IR. Might not work in a shower because the hot water might never shut off. Do you want to be hit with a stream of cold water and stand there shivering while the hot water gets to the shower head?

    Hello,

As beenthere already told there are a lot of sensors and applications.
Here is a lot of information on sensors:
    http://www.educypedia.be/electronics/sensorscap.htm
And other sensors of all kinds:

Sensors: Capacitive sensors Inductive sensors Piezo Displacement sensors Infra red sensors Pressure sensors Temperature sensor types Encoders and resolvers Magnetoresistive sensors Reed switches Thermocouple General overview Miscellaneous Temperature: PT100-RTD Tilt Sensors Hall sensor Optical sensors Temperature sensors Ultrasonic sensors

For information on robotics and sensors, take a look at this page:

Ideally proximity sensor is use to sense metal part only.
Eg:- Use proximity sensor detect metal loading part present
