i am replacing a 2.5 amp mains power supply. why have many recent single output voltage supplies ,become switching power supplies?
looking a bit further the input voltage is variable.
anyone clarify this trend a little?

many thanks

Cheaper to make, more efficient, smaller and lighter than the equivalent output linear version, cheaper to transport. Also, they can work from a much wider range of input voltage (110V - 240V) so the same device can be sold anywhere in the world.
