Guys, this is pretty heavy stuff...

Remember the most important phrase of all:

"Hakuna Matata"

You can either worry about everything, or accept it and live a stress-free life. If you feel strongly about it, then do something about it.

"Hakuna Matata"

Hakuna matata is the boiled frog mentality. How can I live a stress free life when I can't simply force myself to be oblivious to the decay surrounding & encroaching upon me? Like it or not, we are quickly approaching a fight or flight situation where simply being at peace with oneself will be no saving grace.

Mr Chips' cartoon has a fairly well understood meaning to almost everybody, but it has a different meaning to me, and it illustrates my point perfectly. The 2 frogs are sitting in a pot of about-to-boil water, chatting about airport scanners & terrorists. Who gives a damn about that stuff when you're sitting in a pot of about-to-boil water? The water is not airport scanners or terrorists, it's society. We're completely oblivious to it because we're too busy talking about scanners & terrorists, not the other way around. Cause, not effect.

To me, the water is representative of:
  • Our government is a pawn of a higher power. It's no longer for the people, by the people, it's for the highest bidder. We've let politicians legalize bribes for themselves & we've let them hand over our entire economy to said higher power. That's largely what got us into this in the first place.
  • Our way of life is largely based on weeping our wealth into unstable 3rd world countries who hate us, and never getting it back - all in exchange for goods at a slightly cheeper price. It seems pretty obvious to me, that the only possible result is an eventual turning of the tables - they will end up with more of our wealth than we have, and they will use it against us.
  • (related) Our society is held up by toothpicks, the weakest of which is our dependency on oil (largely from previously mentioned unstable countries). Our entire way of life is based on it. Only 2% of Americans filed tax returns for agriculture last year - this means that the other 98% drove to the supermarket and bought their goods which were harvested by gas-burning combines & driven to the supermarket by trucks & trains. We survived the first great depression because half of us were still involved in agriculture. We are headed for another depression, and 98% of us will have little more than Hakuna Matata to fall back on.
  • Society as whole is bound by digital chains of debt, held at the other end by banks. Those of us who are fortunate enough to live debt-free are not out of the Banks's realm of influence, as they control how much our money is worth, via inflation.

I've created another cartoon to demonstrate my own position in Mr Chip's comic:

Good points. :)

But where is that frog jumping to? My guess is that it is only going to another hob. :(
He's jumping to the real estate ads, looking for a plot of land to start a self-sustaining farm (seriously - That's what I'm doing right now).

I'm not in a position to purchase anything right now, but I've recently expressed my concerns to my (much better off, financially) step father and he seemed to take the idea. He's not quite as worried about it as I am, but he agrees that it couldn't hurt to prepare oneself. Coincidentally, he's also always had a strong desire to live off the land, which I didn't know about him. So we are looking in tandem for a small, off the beaten path farm to purchase. The point is to be able to put a meal on the table in any scenario that doesn't invlove money.

When can we expect to see you and yours on an episode of National Geographic Channels "Dooms Day Preppers" ? Years ago when me and a few friends thought this way, others we knew called us - crazy and irrational. Now its going "main stream".

I'm not sure if it's going "main stream", it's just that there's more coverage.

Probably due to '2012'.

Once that's over, there'll be some new conspiracy theory to keep people worrying. :)

LOL :). I was actually saving up for a farm when I got out of the military, but then my priorities were rearranged by a beautiful woman and a little girl. Now I'm back on track, but a little behind the curve. I've been thinking along these lines for a long time. I wrote my high school senior paper on the topic. I've been crazy & irrational for a long time, but I guess I'm becoming less of a minority now. That show is a curiosity for me. I actually find myself calling a lot of the people on there crazy & irrational.

Funny, I thought that was a fire outside the pot. Crispy amphibian, anyone?

When my Dad retired he moved into deep country, along with his wife and kids. Nam had been a rough experience. Water was from a well that ran dry at the drop of a hat, bathing water was from a pond, and since he was the local hermit my brother and I were pretty much outcasts in that small town. The local town's industry killed a lot of good people with chemicals and (in my Mom's case) exposure to fiberglass in the lungs. All of them took 20 years to die.

Look carefully at what you are leaping into, for the wife and kids if not yourself.

Frog aint going nowhere without pants. :) For the rednecks who don't know when you clean a frog and you peal its skin off the body and legs its known as taking his pants off or taking of his britches.

@Strantor - kind of off topic for this thread but thought of you when I watched it. If you get a chance to see a movie/documentary called "Casino Jack and the United States of Money" watch it. It tells the story of Jack Abramoff and all of the things he did. All told by the people involved. Real eye opener about the state of things.
