I recently got rid of a virus on my computer by wiping my hard drive clean. When I reinstalled my OS (Windows XP) though, I discovered I had no sound. The speaker that is usually on corner of the task bar is not there. When I tried to adjust the volume from the start menu, an error comes up saying that I am missing mixer devices. Nothing I have tried has worked as far as going to control panel->from there to device manager. Can anybody help me out?

Do you have on board sound or a PCI sound card?

If you didn't get a CD with them on with your computer, go to the motherboard maufacturers website and download them (or PCI card, whichever). You should be able to get the make and model number somewhere in control panel, I forget where.

Or you can get Aida32 downloaded - http://majorgeeks.com/download181.html

It will identify all the hardware in your system so you can get drivers from the chip manufacturer. I have restored several computers that had been wiped clean using Aida32.
