I bought a new gasoline 1300W generator from Canadian Tire. It is is described as 120V only. It has two standard 120V outlets on the front panel and no 240V outlet. When started the front panel meter shows about 240 V and my Fluke meter reads 251V. It should be 120V. Obviously something is wrong. What do my esteemed colleagues think? It destroyed a laptop.

Sorry, but I don't have that any more. I know it sounds a bit sloppy but this was only started up to make sure it worked and I assumed that the voltage would be more or less OK. I then put it aside and waited for the recent Toronto icestorm. Silly me.

I've done similar things. Indeed, something is wrong. Call technical support, if the manufacturer has one.

Genheads normally have two separate windings, each producing 120V. The windings are connected in series to provide 240V. If you genset has no 240 receptacle and is producing 240V at the 120V receptacles, then it is (obviously) wired wrong. The manufacturer has failed badly, and will be appalled to learn of their error. Contact them, tell them what happened, and I predict they will fall all over themselves to replace your generator and your laptop.

If it were me, I would be cautious about letting the generator out of my control until it was inspected...but that's just my cynical side coming out.

Looking at the Instruction manual and it has the number 55-03080-0 on it which I believe is the CT number. A quick search at CT and on the net doesn't seem to return much.
