To connect something which has micro USB socket to something which has a USB plug.

Why have you just got it if you have no use for it?

Whatever could it be for? You have stumbled upon one of the great mysteries of our time.

Yep, the mini-USB wasn't fragile/intermittant enough. The micro-USB meets the fragility target. So now, you can convert a reliable USB to a less reliable connection.

Keep doing that and you'll end up broke and alone.

.... or maybe not. Micro USB will surely be replaced by Nano USB or Pico USB before long :D.

There's also a variety of types to confuse onlookers.

There's a unique connector USB lead for my Nikon camera that's probably expensive if I have to replace it. Most of the discount shops have micro-USB leads, that don't fit my other camera or any MP3 players.
Mobile phones seem to be yet another connector style for what looks like a micro-USB.

It's a USB OTG (on the go) adapter used to allow some smart phones to host USB peripherals such as flash drives. I have one and have used it for same. I must remember to try plugging in a mouse, keyboard or both some time.
