need light detector transistor alternative

    Any old phototransistor will substitute. Just look for an IR detector.

    An odd solution I've played with, take a metal can transistor and fle the corners. When it comes off you will see the bare phototransistor die. All transistors are photosensitive to one degree or another, add a small lense to focus the light on the die, and you have a home made version.
