So I am trying to understand the datasheet for this seven segment display:

http://www.jameco.com/Jameco/Products/ProdDS/24740.pdf

I have an LSD3211
http://www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/st...Id=10001&ddkey=http:StoreCatalogDrillDownView

On page 3 it states the forward current per chip for red is
40, 40 and 15 for SR, R and H respectively.

What do the SR, R and H stand for and what is the current level I should be targeting for this chip? 40 or 15 mA? I'm guessing 15 since 40mA seems awfully high for an led.

I'm guessing that the SR, R, and H are three different variants on the part (probably what the -XX in the part number is).

Note that these are not the normal operating currents, but the absolute maximum currents that can be tolerated. Also, note that most of these are on a "per chip" basis. I'm pretty sure that this means per segment (each segment is a different LED chip).

You might go to the manufacturers website and submit a query if you can't find the information on their website.
