need help identifying a component

    The black round thing is epoxy.
    Under the black round thing is the microcontroller chip.
    If you told us from where the board originated we could tell you more.

    It's called, "glob top". Just a cheap way to protect the IC.

    In my (admittedly limited) experience I most often see this type of ic form on LCD multiplexer drivers (which given you have a screen in the device might well be the case)

    I have a bathroom scale built like this. I can't keep it in the bathroom because humidity makes it go crazy.:mad:

    Sometimes the manufacturers just go too cheap!
