    Hello guys
i plan to design speed controller for 1Ø AC motor bt I dont wish to include Triac as converter since they costly much!
I'm looking forward to grab what u have on this n which another device u suggest me to use to get task done!

    triacs and thyristors are cheap

You could use a diode in series this is done on many hair dryers

-diode in series for half speed
    -no diode for full speed

As stated by panic mode thyristor are cheap enough and will give you a greater span of control, I dont thing there is another practical and efficient way.

On the unpractical / uneffient method I would suggest a variac, tension divider with a HUGE variable resistor, etc

I have 2 ceiling fans that use a tapped inductor in series with the motor to control speeds. It's old and simple technology, but it works.
