Can I build a USB cable that handles 12v at 5A if I use a connector shown below, and as long as I use 18 gauge wire? Thanks!

FYI, this is not going to be used with a computer. We just like the style of connector here (no clips to hold it in place..the size is ideal.. etc).
The connection points are way to small to carry so much current. You will likely get hot-spots and copper oxide formation where you have heat, especially if you connect/disconnect while powered. Would an SAE connector work for you? (Commonly used in automotive)

The weak link is not the wire, it's the contact. USB has too small a contact area to handle 5 Amps safely for long. It might handle a surge AFTER plugging in. It will surely fail on a Hot Plug In.
