I use my tablet as a GPS while driving. I want to figure out a way to mute the radio when the GPS is giving instructions. The radio has a mute wire so that part is not a problem. I figure I can get a splitter to split the headphone output. 1 output goes to an amp which will feed the front speakers.

Now comes the hard part. Is there a switch or relay that will activate when the headphone wire gets a signal? Then all I would need to do is run the mute wire through it to ground. Grounding the mute wire mutes the radio. Which would let me hear the GPS.

Does the tablet give out a pulse when it gives out audio, if not you will have to detect the audio, rectify it and produce a dc pulse say using a 555 timer to give the mute pulse function.
