I seen college professors who "ignored real world reality" as well in their lab demonstrations.

Largely, I believe, due to the fact that many/most college professors have little to no real world experience. I think that that's a serious problem.

 

Come to think of it, I think he graduated, did his two years afloat and then back to the Academy to teach on the permanent teaching staff. One story I liked about him was as a Cadet, he was accused of cheating because he did a matrix multiplication problem in his head and simply wrote the answer without showing his work. He ended up doing a second problem under the watchful eye of the instructors where he solved the second problem in his head.
