Can the diode test on a multimeter also work as a continuity test?

    Of course.

But most modern multimeter have an audio continuity tester making testing a lot easier.

Multimeter can indicte continuity but cannot represent diode data sheet charactristics.

The only difference between the diode test position and the normal resistance test is the output voltage. The diode test voltage is high enough to forward bias a diode whereas the normal resistance test is generally not.
