I'm a complete newbie to electronics so need a lot of help

I dismantled a chinese made double din dvd player(one of those all in one units) and want to use the screen sliding out mechanism with my own touchscreen for a carputer.
The screen is moved by a 9v motor. It sensors its position using some sort of light sensors (diodes? see pic)

So what I want to do is:
1. There one button to control the screen.
2. If i press it for a short period of time the screen moved a bit out (i.e the motor rotates a small amount). I can repeat this till i get the screen to a position i like
3. If I hold down the same button for a longer period of time (lets say 3 seconds) the screen slides out to its fully open position. When its at this position the dvd drive get a signal to eject the disc
4. While in the position if i press the button again the screen moves back completely to its vertical (neutral) position.
5. Also if you insert a disc to the dvd drive the while fully open the same thing should happen i.e the screen should go back completely

heres a pic of the screen positions. Also a pic of the motor and the black (?diode sensors)

The power will be from the car batter so 12v. The dvd drive is a usb drive with a eject button. i can solder directly to the eject button. Not sure how i'll detect when a cd is inserted - think theres a microswitch which is pressed when a disc is in.

I was thinking of doing this using relays (time delay relay, Polarity conversion cirtuit etc).
I just need to detect when the screen is fully out and fully in so i can stop the motor/ eject disc. Was thinking of using micro switched (The diode sensors or what ever they are is a bit too complicated.)

I was hoping someone can help me do up a circuit preferably using relays or if not some sort of IC.
Please help me!

Doesn't that seem to be a major safety issue? Ford is already having problems becaues of a touch screen function selector.

It sounds like a real driver distraction, so it runs into our automotive guidelines -
3. Add-on items that exist in the passenger spaces is generally okay. Exceptions are lights flashing to music and similar driver distractions. Assurances that the color organ will only get operated while sitting still is not credible.
We can't help you with the project.
