Here i have a motor which i pulled from an old alarm bell i presume,

But my trouble is that the shaft simply moves in and out rather than rotating clockwise or anti clockwise,

Is there a way i can can convert it so that it works just like a standard motor, rotating in a circular motion?

 

How come you did not realize that it is a solenoid
A solenoid moves in or out

 

That appears to be a solenoid. It is designed to be pulled in and out by the windings. It cannot be converted to turn the shaft. But you can convert in/out motion to rotary motion by a crankshaft.

That would be a rather complicated way to get a rotating motor.
