OK, at school right now we are tuning AM receivers. We use a signal generator set at 455kHz and modulating the output.

My question is, what if you have a generator that does not have the modulating feature?

Can you use a rectifying diode and tank circuit resonant at 455kHz to simulate this, or is there another option?

Have a look at Dick Cappels' AM modulator circuit:

Just replace the 4MHz crystal with a 455kHz crystal; no signal generator needed.
