Minterms and Maxterms

Hey,
Why and how exactly do we use minterms and maxterms in Karnaugh mapping? I get that they are used to convert a truth table to a boolean expression. But karnaugh mapping can be totally done without them, right? I don't get the relation between minterms and maxterms and Karnaugh mapping.
