hi i need to program an Medium range Infrared Sensor to measure the water level of a cup approximately 10 to 12 cm. the IR sensor is programmed through a PIc16F877A micro controller. can any one help me in doing the programming part, or have another solution.. thanks

How is the measurement supposed to work? Are you trying to measure the level or when the level reaches some point?

IR isn't really suitable for a level measurement as it moves at the speed of light. For a point measurement you might get some reflection to read off.

For a level measurement an ultrasonic wave would be better. Cheap low frequency sensors abound on the net (search a "ping)))" ), you measure down thru air to the water surface that reflects the wave.

If you drive it with a few megahertz ultrasonic wave you can run the wave up the water so it bounces off the top.
