The best beginners book for Matlab is the manual that comes with the software. Failing having a copy of this book, can I suggest you look a list I compiled of Matlab resources on the net: http://forum.allaboutcircuits.com/blog.php?b=56

The Matlab tutorials links should be more than enough to get you going. Make sure you familiarise yourself with the Matlab Help system (Help > Matlab Help), this will give you a detailed breakdown of the functions and appropriate syntax.
