The most portable and energy-dense battery packs are the lithium-based batteries, but they have their complexities. Most li-ion battery packs will permanently disable themselves if discharged under a safe value, but maybe there are user-friendly packs out there.
I would check radio-control battery packs to see if they're easy to use. You can buy the pack with it's dedicated charger. Probably isn't going to be cheap, but there's nothing like a free launch.
