making a 555?

The question that came to my mind when this guy wanted to re-produce a 555 was:
what'd they do for timers before the "busy chips" came along?

You and Wookie own this forum. You guys make me feel like I never understood anything in two years of ET school. (1977)
Amazing that someone can posses such a thorough working knowlege of Smoke n' Mirrors!

Somehow when it comes to leaning this stuff any more, my mind is like a 'bad little boy' that wants to go out and play rather than study.
I think my learning curve is a very sharp peak of short pulse duration.
But I enjoy reading the answers you guys hand out.

They were using discrete components to build all the circuit. The final circuit was a big board of several components.
Before the transistor was invented, tubes were used to make all the operations. Tubes were bulky and wasted a lot of power. Nowadays, they still use tubes in special applications.
