You have a coil of wire rotating in a magnetic field, one end goes to a switch, thru the shaft, to a terminal. Other end goes to a slip-ring, to a contact or is just grounded thru bearing. Produces about 90V @ 20 Hz with a vigerous cranking. Our number was two long and one short.
