You can make more stuff with a 555 then you could think of in a life time it's been use for all kinds of stuff motor control game controller firing in first shooters radio timers led faders signal generators just to name some.... But this is a help forum not a you give me and I pick what I want.

If you want to do the PWM communication, what uC will you choose, or using a arduino is easier and can be settle down many things in computer.

No way, totally analog - put the audio signal into the CONTROL pin of a 555 timer and get PWM output, drive the IR Emitter.

On the other end, just an OP amp and low pass filter and away you go.
