What device (or does one exist) that has 8 inputs and 3 outputs where the binary output of the the 3 outputs indicates which of the 8 inputs is "low" (or high).

I see that a multiplexer would come close where I could manually "address" through 8 inputs to read them,

Bottom line is the a simple 74xx digital device having 8 inputs and a 3-pin output configuration where I can read that output to see the state of the 8 inputs?

    Thanks

I believe you are looking for a priority encoder, such as the 74148 or the CD4532 (74HC4532).
