LM317T replacement

    I have made a basic adjustable regulator circuit using LM317T which has a resistor connected between Vref and Vout and then a potentiometer.

    As LM317T is TO-220 so the size is big for my purpose.

    Can it be replaced by LM317LZ which is TO-92.
    My input is 12V and required output is 3.6V, 140mA.

    No. The problem is the large voltage drop of 8.4V.
    The device has to dissipate 1.2W. The TO-92 package cannot dissipate this amount of power and will get very hot.

    How about using a zener diode, and a 2 watt resistor.
