What are balance, strobe & Vee pins in LM311 ?

balance & strobe pins seem to be used for offset (input voltage?) adjustment, but please explain their work in detail if possible.

The strobe pin allows you to turn off the output stage.
The balance pin are for canceling the DC-offset voltage.
The Vee pin is use as a voltage supply pin because pin 1 (GND) can be used as a emitter output.

ok. but, what if i want to use it just a basic comparator, do i leave all those 3 pins floating ?
in this datasheet i think they mentioned to short strobe & balance pins when they are not necessary, is that the way to go ? what about Vee pin then, floating ?

Look at simplified diagram that I post last time.
And notice that LM311 contains a op-amp ( a comparator) and additional NPN transistor (emitter at pin 1 and collector at pin 7).
And comparator is supply from pins 8 and 4. And if you don't use balance pins, simply short together pin 6 with pin 5.

ok, and that simplified upper right corner diagram tells me to short pins 1 & 4 to ground for single supply configuration. thanks.
