i am looking for a circuit that will enable me to sequence maybe 4 leds.. the only thing i need the first led to come on and stay on then the second to come on and stay on and the third to come on and stay on and fourth to come on and stay on and then all turn off and start again.. i have 74154 74164 7493 and 4017 available and of course 555,, thank you

 

Have you read LEDs, 555s, Flashers, and Light Chasers , this is a pattern that can be done with a 555, 4017 and diodes. See Chapter 11, Making Patterns.

 

Here's a way you can do it using a 74HC164 and some additional parts.
I simulated it as shown. It should work with any version of 74164, but I didn't simulate it with other versions.
I included the .ASC file for anyone who wants to simulate it in LTspice. If you need the pot files, post here.

 

Probably easier to do with the 555 and a 4015.
