Im trying to make a tach with an LED output display of 20 LEDs. I have scanned through tons of posts and cant seem to find the info I need. Im rather new to electronics, though Im rather a DIY person. Can some one help me design a circuit. 4 cyl engine, looking for a res of 500rpm over 20 LEDs. I did find one circuit as a ref. but not sure if it would fit my application.

That's about the circuit that you want, if you are going to avoid microcontrollers.

Unfortunately, unless you have a good bit of test equipment around, you will have no way to calibrate it to make sure that it is accurate.

If you used a microcontroller, you would know it was within about 1% accuracy, even if it did not use a crystal for a time base.
